Hannibal Buress leaves SNL, gets hired at 30 Rock

The Comic's Comic reported yesterday that SNL writer/stand-up comedian Hannibal Buress has left SNL's writing staff and being recruited to 30 Rock's writing staff. Buress joined SNL's writing staff at the beginning of last season, after head writer Seth Meyers saw his set on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and this summer earned himself an Emmy nomination this summer for his writing contributions.
Hannibal Buress is also a fantastic stand-up comedian and his debut album My Name Is Hannibal debuted at #1 on the iTunes Comedy Album chart this summer.

Bye Hannibal, see you around!

Hannibal Buress #1 on iTunes Comedy Chart

So, Hannibal Buress is kind of a comedy superstar, guys. His album 'My Name Is Hannibal' is atop the iTunes Comedy Album chart and it's out of stock on Amazon! Crazy! He's #8 on the comedy charts on Amazon - underneath every Glee album, Weird Al Yankovic, Eddie Izzard's Dressed To Kill and Tom Lehrer. Did I mention it was only released yesterday? Insane!

Congratulations to Hannibal on all this success! And if you haven't bought the album already, what are you doing? It's hilarious! Get on that!

Hannibal Buress' album "My Name Is Hannibal" Drops Tomorrow

Just a reminder that SNL writer Hannibal Buress' album "My Name Is Hannibal" drops tomorrow.

About.Com says the album is "something special" and "shows the promise of greatness for Hannibal Buress", while Consequence of Sound declares that ".. there’s never going to be another Hannibal Buress. He’s an honest comic who makes weird asides and awesomely silly observations."

If you haven't ordered it already, do yourselves a favour and order it from Amazon here.

Here are some testimonials from other comics about Hannibal -

"If Steven Wright, Mos Def and Dave Chappelle had a baby, that would be disgusting, but it would sound like Hannibal Buress. The funniest young comic I've seen in years."
- Chris Rock

"Hannibal is incredibly funny with a smart, unique style and I am proud to be his father."
-Jim Gaffigan

"I haven't heard this album, and I never will. But I've seen Hannibal do comedy, and if the CD is a recording of him doing comedy, then it's probably worth getting. I mean, I still won't get it, but you can. And you might like it."
-Todd Barry

"Hannibal is funny on stage and off stage and right in between, too."
-Demetri Martin

"Hannibal's debut album is hilarious. Also hilarious - Aziz Ansari's debut album Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening, now available in stores EVERYWHERE!"
-Aziz Ansari

"One of the best joke writers I've ever seen. He's one of the few performers I've come across that creates such electricity in a room that I think 'this guy is going to be a star FOR SURE."
-Mike Birbiglia

Surely you don't need more convincing? Buy Hannibal's album now!

Pre-Order Hannibal Buress CD "My Name is Hannibal"

You can pre-order Hannibal Buress' CD "My Name is Hannibal" here on Amazon.com-
http://www.amazon.com/My-Name-Hannibal-Buress/dp/B003TVQPAQ

It costs $14.99 and will be released on July 27.
Here's the product description -

"Hannibal Buress is one of the silliest, smartest, and most distinctive voices in comedy. And those who know that Stand Up! Records cut our teeth on comics like Patton Oswalt, Doug Stanhope, and Maria Bamford, know we don't say that lightly. No, Buress is the real deal. A Chicago native, Saturday Night Live writer, and one of the few black men to make it big in Heeb Magazine, Buress has a peerless deadpan delivery, brilliant timing, and a knack for the nonsequitur. He's got a yen to punt a pigeon, but the street smarts to know the papers are just gonna run with ''Black Dudes Kicking Pigeons!'' the next day. He leans when he texts so it'll come out italic. He daydreams about strangling guys who ask ''Is your name really Hannibal? Like that's on your birth certificate? Like, your parents call you Hannibal?'' just to find out if they'll squawk Are you choking me? With your hands? Are you trying to restrict the flow of oxygen to my brain?'' He single-handedly wrote a jingle for Plan B and called it ''Zygote Killers.'' And yes, Hannibal Buress likes burritos more than Jesus. Because steak burritos are delicious. And they're real. New York Magazine recently named Buress one of their top ten ''Comics to Watch,'' but we think you're gonna want to listen to his first stand-up CD, ''My Name is Hannibal,'' out now from Stand Up! Records, home of fine comedy. And pigeon-kickers."

In related news, Hannibal Buress is the headliner at tonight's Whiplash show at UCB. Advanced reservations are sold out, but there will be a standby line.

Also, Hannibal was featured in New York Daily News as one of five performers who are on the verge of greatness. They did a brief Q&A with him that I have pasted after the jump.

John Mulaney and Hannibal Buress at Just For Laughs

SNL writers John Mulaney and Hannibal Buress were out in full force at last week's Just For Laughs festival in Chicago. John Mulaney performed multiple times including at Ellen Degeneres' TBS Special while Hannibal Buress opened for Aziz Ansari. Both guys received excellent reviews throughout the week.
I've got photos of Mulaney and Buress in action after the jump.

Pitchfork Music Festival has added four comedians to its ever-growing bill. The festival, which will be held in Chicago's Union Park between July 16-18, has added Wyatt Cenac, Eugene Mirman, Michael Showalter and SNL writer/stand-up comedian Hannibal Buress to its bill for Friday July 16.

If you don't already have tickets, there are still tickets left for Friday which you can buy here -

The musical line-up for Pitchfork Musical Festival includes Modest Mouse, Broken Social Scene, LCD Soundsystem, Sleigh Bells and tons of other bands that I've never heard of but would expect Pitchfork to like.

The Awkward Comedy Show

So, The Awkward Comedy  Show is a documentary of sorts which showcases the Awkward Kings of Comedy, namely Victor Varnado, Baron Vaughn, Eric Andre and SNL writer Hannibal Buress.

According to the Amazon summary -
Comic Marina Franklin interviews the Awkward Kings, whose ranks include alternative stand-up artists Victor Varnado, Hannibal Buress, Eric André and Baron Vaughn. The film captures their antics on and off the stage through group hang-out sessions, informal interviews and personal vignettes animated by underground comic book artists. While the Kings each have their own wacky style, they all have two things in common: they re all a little weird, and they all challenge our preconceptions of what black comedy is and can be.

Riffing on topics ranging from Shakespeare to science fiction, THE AWKWARD KINGS inject black comedy with a fresh and nerdy new style.

By all accounts, it's very good and it's available to buy on Amazon now at -

Do it!

Hannibal Buress Interview

Check out this interview  and this article with/about SNL writer/comedian Hannibal Buress in which he discusses writing for SNL, some of his failed sketch ideas ("fedora basketball") and of course his stand-up.

Quote from Seth Meyers -
Meyers, however, says it's tough for any writer during the first year. "I'm in my ninth year and it's still hard. With that said, Hannibal is great at the rewrite table and adds a lot of value to the weekly process. He's also, bar none, the funniest person in pitch on Monday, which is no small task."

For anyone unfamiliar with Buress' stand-up, do yourself a favour and check out his stuff on YouTube.
