Outstanding Writing for A Variety Show Emmy Vid

Check out this nice little nominees video that aired during the Primetime Emmys on Sunday. It's for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Show and in order to list out all the writers from each show, each nominated show puts together a funny little short listing the names. SNL's is at the very end & features one-time SNL host Brian Williams.

Madonna on SNL

The ever-trustworthy internet is reporting that Madonna could be all set to appear on SNL at some point this season. Producers are apparently keen to have her host & perform, though it's likely she'll just do one or the other.

Now this is a show I'd like to see happen!

Rob Pattinson to Host SNL?

Maybe, maybe not, but at the Emmy awards, Seth Meyers told E! that SNL would love to get Rob Pattinson to come host the show.

"We're actually hoping if [Rob's] not available, at least his hair will come by and host," Meyers added.

I understand that a show hosted by Rob Pattinson would do great ratings-wise but I just cannot see Edward Cullen being funny in a sketch comedy environment.

What do you think? Should SNL get Robert Pattinson to host or should they leave that ship sail?

Commiserations..

..to SNL who did not receive any Emmys at lasy night's awards show despite being nominated for five major ones. Kristen Wiig & Amy Poehler lost out to Kristen Chenoweth (who I bet on in last night's post) while The Daily Show with Jon Stewart took Best Writing & Best Variety wins. I'm not 100% sure on who won Best Song but it certainly wasn't Motherlover.

Oh well, always next season!

Good Luck @ the Emmys!

Just wishing SNL luck at the Emmy Awards tonight where they are up for multiple awards including Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig), Best Song (Motherlover - JT/Lonely Island) Best Writing for A Variety/Comedy Series & Best Variety/Comedy Series. They are competing against the Comedy Central boys in the latter categories, not to mention Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien & Real Time with Bill Maher.

If I'm being honest I really hope that Kristen Wiig wins the Emmy, but my gut feeling says that Amy Poehler will take it as she submitted the Josh Brolin episode (with the infamous Sarah Palin rap). I'm thinking Emmy voters will recognise her past contributions to the show over Kristen's anchoring of the show last season. If neither of them win, I'm betting on Kristen Chenoweth to take it.

Do you think Amy & Kristen stand a chance at taking the Emmy? Who do you think deserves it more? Should Amy's past contributions be recognised or should Kristen's work as SNL's resident workhorse last season be rewarded?

SNL Weekend Update Thursday Review

Cold Open - So I really liked the premise of all this - the notion of the Republicans all planning to shout "You lie!" until they scrap the idea unbeknownst to Joe Wilson is kinda hilarious - but it didn't bring as many laughs as I would have hoped. Will Forte's impression was very funny as was his panicked face - "I don't know if you know this about me, but I'm not known for anything else except this!"
Nice concept, a little short on laughs but great work by Will Forte & Jason Sudeikis. 7/10

Weekend Update - Sharp jokes & a welcome start to the SNL season. Bill Hader's James Carville blew my mind it was so funny & even Jimmy Carter and Michael Steele (I don't usually enjoy the Darrell/Kenan couplings) made me laugh a couple of times, particularly Steele's attempts to use ebonic phrases. What I think made me chuckle most was Kristen Wiig's Madonna. The long drawn-out blinks, and the completely self-centred manner with which she delivered her tribute to Gertrude Baines (akin to her Michael Jackson tribute) -
"Please Seth, don't interrupt me while I'm honouring this great great woman. And Gertrude Baines." Gold.

However the true highlight of the show was Really?!? with Seth and Amy. Oh how I missed Seth Meyers & Amy Poehler saying what everyone else thinks (with a ton more laughs) about them crazy-doings of celebrities/those in political office. Favourite moment? When Seth pointed out that saying "You lie!" sounds like you're a toddler or someone who's just learned English.

Overall, I think this was a strong start to what I hope will be as strong a season as last season. No sign of the newbies during the show or Andy Samberg, Bobby Moynihan & Abby Elliott for that matter, so I'm extra excited for next week's edition & SNL with Megan Fox/U2.

Seth Meyers to go WU Alone

Seth Meyers has himself confirmed that he will man the WU desk alone for Season 35. Addressing the rumours that Kristen Wiig would join him as co-anchor, he said that she was "almost too valuable," saying that were she to become WU anchor she would be unable to perform her hilarious characters at WU.
He would not say much about the premature departures of Casey Wilson & Michaela Watkins saying only, "I think that the two who are leaving are going to be incredibly successful wherever they go."
On Jenny Slate & Nasim Pedrad's hirings he was very positive describing them both as "great writers as well as performers." He said turnover at 30 Rockefeller Plaza helps keep the humour fresh."It's always nice to have new people," he said. "They'll give new looks at things and see things in new ways. Any time you get new voices in, that tends to help."

SNL Wins At Creative Arts Emmy Awards!

SNL picked up not one, but two big awards at last night's Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
Tina Fey won for Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her numerous appearances as Sarah Palin, while Justin Timberlake won Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his hosting appearance in Season 34 (y'know the one where it turned into the Justin Timberlake Comedy Hour).

Accepting her statuette, Tina Fey thanked her former SNL colleagues and her Republican parents. “They thought the first four sketches were very funny,” Fey said. “The last two were, in their words, ‘Enough already.’”
In closing, Fey acknowledged Sarah Palin herself. “Mrs. Palin is an inspiration to working mothers everywhere,” Fey joked, “because she bailed on her job right before Fourth of July weekend.”
